Manduka Upakhyan (Thus spoke the frog 1970)
Professor Krishna Mohan (He teaches biology in a college) has dissected five thousand frogs so far to explore a rare jewel on the head of a particular frog. The play, set in a living room and on a rainy day hypothesizes that when the first drop of rain falls on the frog’s head, it turns into a pearl. When the snake swallows the frog, the pearl goes to the hood of the snake and frog goes to the stomach
Prof. KM, in the course of his search, has forgotten to sleep with his wife for the last eleven years. His wife, Madhabi, childless and depraved, has stolen two of the frogs form the husband’s store and nurtures them as her children: teaches them nursery rhymes and plays with them in lonely hours. One day, her childhood friend comes and stays with them and Krishna Mohan suddenly becomes conscious that he is also a husband and he has some claims over Madhabi. All that he has to do is to assert his masculinity. The play was first broadcast from All India Radio, Cuttack with Dukhiram Swain and Malabika Ray in the lead roles and it was directed / produced by late Dasarathi Prasad Das in July, 1971. Dr. Surendra prasad Das directed it for Ganjam Kala Parishad, Berhampur. Sri Dolagobind Rath(NSD) directed this for Rang Dhara, Bhubaneswar in 1983, 2002 and for Canmass, Paradip in 2008. The play was translated into Bengali by Ms. Bhaswati Basu and was directed by Mr.Kingshuk Chatterjee. Soumita, a gold-medalist in acting from Rabindra Bharati, played in the female lead and the play was last performed on 28-3-2015 in civic centre, Rourkela.
